A mattress needs a different cleaning approach from a carpet. Moisture can be difficult to remove from its inner layers, and foam, latex and sprung mattresses may have different care requirements. Start with the manufacturer’s label before using any cleaning product.
Remove bedding and check the care instructions
Wash sheets and the mattress protector according to their labels. A zipped mattress cover is not necessarily removable or washable, so check before taking it off. Inspect the surface for spills, damage and damp areas.
Vacuum the surface gently
Use a clean upholstery attachment on an appropriate setting. Work slowly over the top and accessible sides, paying attention to seams without pulling at the fabric. Vacuuming removes loose debris; it does not remove every stain or contamination inside the mattress.
Spot clean with minimal moisture
Blot fresh liquid with a clean white towel. If the manufacturer allows spot cleaning, test its recommended product in a hidden area and apply a small amount to a cloth. Avoid soaking the mattress or scrubbing the cover.
Do not use a homemade peroxide, bleach or detergent mixture as a universal stain treatment. It may discolour the fabric or leave residues. Tell a professional about blood, urine or other body-fluid stains so they can assess the appropriate approach.
Let the mattress dry completely
Keep bedding off until the mattress is thoroughly dry and follow the manufacturer’s ventilation advice. Do not use excessive heat to speed up the process. If it remains damp, develops a musty smell or has suspected mould inside, ask for advice before sleeping on it again.
Is steam cleaning suitable for every mattress?
No. The material and manufacturer’s instructions determine whether an extraction or moisture-based treatment is suitable. Memory foam and other moisture-sensitive constructions need particular care. Professional cleaning also cannot guarantee removal of every stain or odour.
Make future cleaning easier
Use a suitable washable protector, wash bedding regularly and deal with spills promptly. Rotate or turn the mattress only as directed by its manufacturer.
