Carpet cleaning

Removing pet smell starts with finding the source. Fragrance may cover an odour temporarily, but it will not remove urine residue, dirty bedding or contamination beneath a carpet. Work through the affected rooms before choosing a treatment.

Start with bedding and everyday pet areas

Wash removable pet bedding and washable covers according to their labels. Dry them completely before use. Clean litter areas and pet equipment with suitable products, and vacuum loose hair from carpet edges and beneath accessible furniture.

Clean your vacuum’s bin and maintain its filters according to the manual. Only wash filters that are designed to be washed, and allow them to dry fully before refitting.

Respond promptly to fresh carpet accidents

Blot up moisture with white absorbent towels. Do not scrub or flood the spot. A carpet-compatible pet treatment may help, but check fibre suitability and the label first; not every enzyme product suits wool.

Keep pets and children away for the product’s stated treatment and drying period. Do not mix deodoriser with other cleaners or add fragrances to cleaning solutions.

Why does the urine smell keep returning?

Urine can reach the carpet backing, underlay and sometimes the floor below. Cleaning only the visible surface may leave part of the source untreated. A smell that returns after cleaning needs assessment rather than repeated spraying.

Severe contamination may require underlay replacement or work on the subfloor. Those steps depend on inspection and are separate from a normal carpet clean. Read about Fastline’s specialist odour removal service.

Check other surfaces

Inspect upholstery, washable curtains and nearby hard floors. Follow each surface’s care instructions and test cleaners first. Do not use strong alkaline products on an unidentified tile or stone surface. Ventilation can help with stale air, but removing the odour source remains the priority.

What should you tell the cleaner?

  • Where the smell is strongest and how long it has been present.
  • Whether accidents have happened repeatedly.
  • Which products or treatments have already been used.
  • Whether the smell changes after the carpet gets damp.
